Goldshire

19 September 2008

Although I have been wandering around the city of Stormwind for a few days, I still haven't found anything to do yet. Although I think I could spend ages here just looking around, I've got an unsettling feeling that I ought to be doing more than just exploring the same city.

That is exactly what I was doing this morning when I stumbled across Farie, the tailor gnome I'd met a few days prior.

In fact, I was wearing the outfit she'd made; it was much more comfortable than my leathers, and so I'd been wearing it around town the last few days, washing the clothes whenever I would take the chance to bathe.

We greeted and had a fairly long chat, which eventually ended up in the two of us taking a walk around the city together. For one who is still a child, she's done so much more than me, which didn't help my uneasiness about spending so much time doing little productive. And yet, in spite of all she's done, she claimed she found me interesting! I did not really fully understand her reasons; she seemed to think I was interesting because there was a lot I needed to learn and I was trying to learn it. Perhaps that's just a trait gnomes value?

Well, our walk eventually took us to the front gate of Stormwind, and remembering my feeling that I needed to do something other than explore Stormwind, I expressed interest in leaving the city, and asked what was beyond the gates. Farie told me that the lands beyond the gate were called Elwynn Forest, and its major town was Goldshire.

Oddly, though, she seemed hesitant to go to Goldshire. She seemed to think it was a bad town, which would make sense, except the gates of Stormwind facing it were wide open — if it were really a bad place, wouldn't the gates be closed?

There was some misunderstanding between us for a while — she was using a lot of common words that I'd never been taught, and I can understand why, as once she described what she meant, I realized that her concern was that the town was a place known for acts between people that many people don't find polite to talk about. Not exactly the kind of language you learn from a class! But that still didn't fully make me understand why I shouldn't go there; just because I went to a town didn't mean I had to participate in those activities!

Farie still seemed convinced that I might be in danger of doing something I didn't want to, and I didn't really understand what she meant. I mean, if I do something, I want to do it, and I don't do things I don't want to do without a good reason! She eventually relented, but still seemed very uneasy as she accompanied me into the town. I find her very curious!

It was not as bad as she seemed to think it was, though. We went to the town, and the first person I met — a human woman, whose name sadly slips my mind — introduced herself, and after a few minutes of pleasantries, she offered to give me a tour of the area. Farie came too, although I got the impression she'd already been to these places. We toured an Abbey, stopped back in the town of Goldshire, and then visited a tower and a lumber mill. I wish Daari had been there for the last part of the trip... there were all sorts of animals and loud noises around.

By then, I'd been walking for quite a while, and it was getting late, so I let my companions know that I should like to head back to the city. Farie told us she could provide a shortcut... and conjured what she said was a portal that would instantly transport me back to Stormwind if I stepped through it. She created it, so I took one look at it and jumped through... and sure enough, I found myself in Stormwind!

I may have to ask her about the other places to which she could create such a portal when I next see her — I was too tired to remember to ask. As it is, I should get some rest now, rather than staying up writing!
